House Cleaning Tips

House cleaning tips based on our day to day experience of cleaning all sizes and types of property.

1. Fill your home with soothing smells

The calming effects of certain fragrances have been known for centuries. So if you drop some essential oils in your bath for a relaxing soak, why not extend this and fill your home with fragrance to help you unwind while you’re doing your household chores? At First Choice Cleaners we love to use products that will release the scent of spring around your home as we mop wooden floors or blitz the bathroom.

Fragrance is great when it comes to sleep, too, as it helps you to drift off and slumber soundly – and a good night’s sleep is great for stress relief. For this, we suggest you may wish to spray your bedding and cushions with fabric scents every day to eliminate bad odours and leave a fresh, subtle smell in the air. You can also find some great suggestions in this article from Better Homes and Gardens

2. Take your stress out on the house

Many experts believe that hitting inanimate objects can help externalise any stress and anger you might be feeling inside and thereby provide stress relief. And while we don’t condone hitting things, plumping up your cushions is a great way to vent some pent-up aggression. And you end up with firmer-looking cushions. Result!

Indeed, every morning, we “karate chop” our bed cushions to get them looking just-so, and to help set up for the day ahead! Other household chores to try include using a dry hand squeegee to scrape all the hair and fur out of your carpet. So satisfying! Also, achieving a tough cleaning job can make you feel great: try tackling the grimy underside of your pots and pans for a satisfying cleaning task.

3. Make a productivity checklist

Every Friday, its good to grab a notepad and pen and makes your way around the house, making a list of household chores that need doing. In particular, those jobs that aren’t part of your regular routine, but have been bugging you: messy food cupboards, disorganised drawers, dirt build-up around the windows, and so on.

Getting these jobs down onto paper helps to prioritise and fix a goal for that day – although make sure it’s realistic for the time you have, otherwise you’ll just stress yourself out more! Plus, as you make your way through the list, the sense of satisfaction when ticking off each task is great for stress relief. After all, cleaning your house is something you can control.

4. Clear out clutter

A cluttered home makes for a cluttered mind, so it’s important to keep your home free of unnecessary knick-knacks. We are huge fans of using baskets and storage to help organise the home.

How to deep clean your fridge

Five simple steps to a sparkling and beautifully organised fridge…

Plan ahead

First, empty all food from the fridge. Bacteria can multiply quickly at room temperature so put dairy products, meat and other food that needs to be kept refrigerated in a cool bag packed with pre-chilled cool bag blocks. It’s a good idea to do the deep clean the fridge before the weekly shop when there will be less food in the fridge anyway.

Bin any food that is clearly past its prime or anything that is past its use-by date.

Wash shelves and salad drawers

Take out the salad crisper drawers from the bottom of the fridge and take out all the removable shelves. If it’s not obvious how to get them out, check the user manual before you start so you know exactly how to do it without damaging anything – it will also help you to get them back in! If you can’t find the user guide, check the manufacturer’s website or try espares.co.uk.

Next, wash the shelves and the salad crispers thoroughly with washing-up liquid and hot water. If the shelves (or any other removable parts) are made of glass, it’s best to let them reach room temperature first to reduce the risk of them shattering in very hot water.

Use a toothpick to remove food residue that has collected in the join between the surface of the shelf and the shelf surround. Rinse the shelves and salad crispers with clean water, then allow them to dry naturally on the drainer or dry with a clean tea towel and put them to one side if your drainer isn’t big enough.

Wipe down the interior

Now turn your attention to the inside of the fridge itself. Avoid using hot water at this point as it can raise the temperature of the fridge and this will delay how quickly you can get your perishable food back in. Instead, make up a solution of Milton Sterilising Fluid with cold water, and use this to wipe down the interior.

Pay particular attention to the grooves on the sides of the fridge interior where which the shelves rest, as they can be hotspots for dirt. A cotton bud is a handy tool for getting old food out of these. Cotton buds are also useful for fiddly places, such as the drip hole at the back which can easily become clogged and grimy. Dry the inside of the fridge thoroughly using paper towels or a clean tea towel.

Clean outer surfaces

Don’t overlook areas outside the fridge such as the handle and door surround, where germs can build up through frequent contact with hands. If you have a fridge freezer with the freezer at the bottom, use the crevice nozzle of your vacuum cleaner to remove food crumbs that have collected in the folds of the freezer door seal. Alternatively, use a stiff washing up brush to dislodge them.

Run the corner of a linen or cotton tea towel dipped in Milton solution along the folds for a hygienic clean and use a fresh corner of the towel to dry the door seal afterwards.

Allow to cool

Replace the shelves and salad crisper drawers. If you have a fridge thermometer, wait until the temperature inside the fridge falls to 5°C or below before replacing the food. If your fridge has a fast-cool function, use it to speed up the cooling process.

How to Clean Your Dishwasher

HOW DO I CLEAN MY DISHWASHER WITH VINEGAR?

You might be surprised by all the problems you can solve with apple cider vinegar. But for this chore, white vinegar works best. Fill a dishwasher-safe cup or bowl with white vinegar and place it on the upper rack of your machine. Run the otherwise-empty dishwasher on the hottest setting—this will allow the vinegar to absorb odours and erode grimy build up on the walls of the machine. Vinegar is astringently acidic, which makes it a great agent for breaking down scum on most appliances (you can use it to clean your washing machine, too). Keep a spray bottle with vinegar on hand and spritz the inside of your machine frequently in between washes for prolonged sparkle.

HOW DO I CLEAN YOUR DISHWASHER WITH BAKING SODA?

It’s a safe and mild alkali substance that goes a long way in removing persistent residue left by food waste. Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda along the bottom of your dishwasher and rinse on a hot-water cycle. Repeat this process when you have especially stubborn stains or smells. For extra cleaning punch, create “baking soda bombs” by mixing 2 cups of baking soda with 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in a bowl until it’s a paste-like consistency. Drop spoonfuls onto parchment paper and allow to dry for a few hours. Toss them on the bottom of your dishwasher and run a hot-water cycle in an empty machine. For a fresher scent, add a few drops of an essential oil to the mix.

HOW DO I CLEAN A DISHWASHER DRAIN TRAP?

With most modern dishwashers, you don’t need to fully rinse the dishes before loading them into the machine. Doing so can actually make the machine less efficient, as the internal sensor will think that the dishes are clean and sanitized before they actually are—causing it to run a shorter cycle. That said, go ahead and scrape off any large pieces of food as they are candidate no. 1 for clogging the dishwasher drain trap.

Speaking of the drain trap, check it frequently to make sure there’s not a bunch of gross stuff in there just waiting to stink up the place. If there is, start by removing and disassembling it. Once it’s apart, use a sponge or toothbrush and dish soap to remove any stuck-on food bits or mould.

of course, if you’d rather leave this to the professionals then we would be delighted to help, just contact us at https://firstchoicecleaners.co.uk/ and we will take of the cleaning for you

House Cleaner Wimbledon

Hiring a House Cleaner Wimbledon was an easy decision

I’m the first to confess that house cleaning isn’t my favourite task of the week. In fact, I would prefer not to do it all if I had the choice.

I work full time and often need to travel to meet clients either face to face or more recently via online video meetings, so it’s hard to juggle my busy schedule.

As a busy mum with two teenage daughters, I find it very difficult to balance the tasks between keeping the house clean and keeping on top of my work. So it became obvious to me that we needed to find a house cleaner in Wimbledon.

Initially, locating a first rate cleaner was hard. I spoke with many friends and colleagues and even posted adverts online, however, they did not work. Either the responses were very slow or non-existent or they were in poor English and I could not understand what they were saying.

Then I bumped into a friendly neighbour and told them about my challenge, she advised that she had been using First Choice Cleaners for a couple of years and that they were fantastic. So without any further hesitation, I called First Choice Cleaners and was very impressed with the first contact. I spoke with the owner of the company and she explained the full service to me and the fact that they had been operating in the Wimbledon area for almost 20 years!! That sounded like music to my ears.
